The work carried out in ASPECT on seamless climate predictions can potentially provide valuable insights for National Meteorological Services (NMSs), which strive to provide timely and reliable weather and climate predictions, early warnings and other services to the public.
In order to foster collaboration and share the lessons learned in the project, a two-day workshop was organised in October 2024 for NMSs in Europe and beyond, bringing together lead researchers representing different centres and services.
The workshop explored new forecasting horizons examined in ASPECT, spanning from seasons to decades. The advances in climate prediction, the value of initialisation, as well as the limitations of state-of-the-art multi-system predictions were explored in the two-day workshop from the perspectives of both providers and users.
This online workshop was carried out with overwhelming participation and interest from NMSs and climate prediction experts, with a total of 150 attendees in the two days of the event.
The first day focused on the production and provision of operational and innovative seasonal-to-decadal predictions. Protocols for providing climate information and efforts on how to make data fair, along with the challenges faced, were presented and discussed.
The second day explored the current multi-system predictions, the added value of initialisation, limitations faced, and methods for temporal merging and downscaling. Furthermore, the session also delved into the close work of ASPECT with users from a number of sectors to co-developed tailored climate information for better-informed adaptation decisions, while also discussing climate information use in Europe.
